First 24 Hours After a Loss

The decisions you make immediately after a loss shape everything that follows.

Notify your carrier immediately

Most policies require prompt notice of loss. Delayed reporting gives the carrier grounds to question coverage. Report even if you're unsure whether you'll file a formal claim.

Photograph everything before cleanup

Do not throw anything away. Do not begin permanent repairs. Photograph every inch of damage from multiple angles before anything is touched or removed.

Take emergency mitigation steps only

You are required to prevent additional damage — tarping a roof, boarding windows, extracting standing water. Document these steps and keep all receipts. Emergency mitigation is covered; permanent repairs are not until the adjuster inspects.

File a police report for theft or vandalism

Theft claims without a police report are routinely questioned. File the report even if recovery is unlikely.

Keep every receipt from day one

If your home is uninhabitable, Additional Living Expense coverage reimburses hotel, meals, and storage. Every receipt counts — ALE is only paid on documented expenses.
